Specialist dementia care centre opens in Newark

A distinct dementia and alzheimer care home has been officially opened in Nottinghamshire. The purpose-built £3.4 million Lancaster Grange Care Home on the Fernwood Park Estate in Newark has been built by Bullock and is considered by owners, Barchester, as being one of its most important dementia developments to date.

The care home provides long and short term accommodation along with assessment and respite facilities catering specifically for those suffering from varying stages of dementia and alzhemiers.

Constructed by Bullock to a unique design specification, the centre features distinct building elements that will provide a more calming atmosphere for residents making use of the facility. These include doors integrated into partition walls and carefully selected paint colours that will work to sooth and reassure the care homes ageing residents.

The 60 bed home also incorporates areas including large open plan lifestyle kitchens and laundries where residents can engage in everyday tasks and take pleasure in activities including cooking and socialising.

Other outstanding design and build features include glass atriums providing naturally lit seating areas; landscaped gardens; the use of objects of interest to help with ‘sensing’ routes around the building; and extensive use of the colour yellow seen as a stimulating colour for dementia sufferers.

The centre also houses a number of personal touches including memory boxes installed outside the rooms of all residents.  Incorporating items such as pictures, memorabilia and other personal effects, the boxes are designed both to help residents feel at home and, for those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s, to recognise their living environment.

Outside there is a fully enclosed safe and secluded sensory garden, including planting areas, where residents, who are interested in gardening, can put their horticultural skills to use.

Speaking about the construction, Duncan Williams, regional director at Bullock said: “Lancaster Grange has been a hugely important development for us. This is a superb facility offering some very unique design and build features that will support and care for older people and those living with dementia.
