Professor Martin Green, CEO at Care England, wants more integration between the health and adult social care system in 2021.
Writing in The Telegraph, Green’s New Year message was full of frustration.
He said the COVID-19 pandemic had highlighted the lack of joined up systems and it was time outcomes replaced process.
He added that health and social care are two sides of the same coin and cannot operate in isolation.
“By throwing all resources at the NHS and leaving social care out in the cold, mistakes have been made. We cannot afford such mistakes to occur again.”
In the article Green pointed out that bureaucracy was stopping care providers from being as creative as they could be.
“Care homes have been very innovative in creating solutions to the problems created by COVID-19. For example using video communication tools and remote monitoring,” he wrote.
“The NHS has been playing catch up in helping providers to find digital solutions. NHSX needs to resource the support care homes need to survive, and implement new technology so they remain sustainable.”
“This could mirror the NHS’s plan and enable career progression, showing care to be a profession rather than a job.”
