Care homes meals provider apetito has unveiled eight plant-based dishes as part of its innovative Culinary Inspirations series.
The company says the launch is in response to the increase in the number of vegetarians and vegans in Britain. In 2019 there were an estimated 600,000 people following these diets while more people are choosing to eat less meat.
Chef Lydia Downey worked with apetito’s in-house chefs and dietitians to devise the range. The dishes include a fragrant Thai Red Curry, creamy Butternut Squash Risotto and an exotic BBQ Mexican Bean & Jackfruit dish.
Downey said the new meals will introduce new flavours to care home residents who may not have tried them before. “It will also encourage them to eat a different type of cuisine which is both delicious and nutritious.”
She added: “I’m creating a dish, particularly focusing on elements such as protein and fibre as well as including a varied assortment of vegetables, all of which are essential considerations when making a plant-based meal.”
There is a growing demand in care homes for more variety in dishes, said divisional manager – care homes Neil Hargreaves.
“Our aim is to enable homes to offer residents an enhanced choice in dishes, with flavour they will love, while delivering exceptional nutrition,” he said.
Hargreaves took part in our recent catering podcast which you can find on our podcast page
