New rooms to be en-suite in Wales, by regulation

New rooms in Welsh care homes will need to have en-suite facilities and possibly, extra communal and accessible outdoor space, following a Government decision to improve the built care estate in Wales.

Following consultation, new rules require en-suite bathrooms to have an accessible wash hand basin, lavatory, and shower, grab rails and emergency call systems.

They apply to care homes accommodating five or more people and are covered in amendments to the Regulated Services (Service Providers and Responsible Individuals) (Wales) Regulations 2017.

In terms of outside space, care homes are referred to the regulations which cover the need to provide sufficient communal and accessible outdoor space.

Also amended is to exempt intermediate care services provided by a local authority from having to register as a care home service, subject to certain conditions.

A report on the consultation outcome was published in October 2023.
