Care England writes to PM hopefuls with funding bid

Care England has written to Conservative leadership hopefuls Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP and Rt Hon Liz Truss MP. The letter calls for a commitment to ‘fix’ social care sector within the first one-hundred days of entering office.

Chief executive Professor Martin Green OBE said the sector faced a range of problems. These include: immediate financial pressures, rising energy prices, inflation, the cost-of-living crisis.

In the letter, he added that there had been decades of neglect and chronic underfunding.

He said: “Government inaction has meant that care providers are limited in their opportunities to provide their staff with the remuneration and benefits afforded to NHS colleagues.”

The ADASS Member Survey and a report by the parliamentary Levelling-Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Committee have both highlighted market dysfunction recently.

Care England’s letter to the leadership hopefuls calls for remedial measures, including:

  • Funding to cover rising energy costs as well as the funding gap
  • Equalised pay rates between domestic and overseas staff.
