Care homes witness higher rates of ethnic COVID deaths

Care homes have seen a higher proportion of COVID-19 deaths among Black, Asian and White residents than for social care as a whole, new data from the CQC reveals.

The data for 10 April -15 May 2020 shows that in care home settings only, 54 per cent of deaths amongst Black people and 49 per cent of deaths amongst Asian people were related to COVID-19 compared to 44 per cent of deaths of White people and 41 per cent for mixed or multiple ethnic groups.

This compares to adult social care services as a whole where deaths due to confirmed or suspected COVID-19 stood at 49 per cent for Black people, 42 per cent for Asian people compared to White people (41 per cent) and people from mixed or multiple ethnic groups (41 per cent).

Caveats to the findings include that ethnicity is not a mandatory field in a death report, nor is it checked for accuracy.

However, Kate Terroni, chief inspector of Adult Social Care at the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said: “More data is critical to understanding the actions that need to be taken across adult social care to ensure that all people are given safe, high quality care, appropriate for their individual needs.
