Chai Patel joins Demos commission on ageing population

Dr Chai Patel, chairman of HC-One, which runs 230 homes across the country will be joining a small group of experts in the care sector to form the new Commission on Residential Care.

The year-long Commission, hosted by leading think tank Demos and led by former Care Minister Paul Burstow MP, will review the most pressing concerns in the residential care sector and propose new solutions to meet the needs of the UK’s varied and ageing population.

The Commission on Residential Care has been formed to establish the proper role of residential care in a modern care system. It will envision a care sector that is financially sustainable and consistently delivers personalised care that empowers individuals to be as independent as possible within a supportive community.

The Commission will consider the financial, operational, governance and cultural aspects of residential care and how these might be improved – drawing on existing good practice – so that the sector can respond positively to the challenges facing it.

Dr Patel said: “I am very grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Commission on Residential Care and to share the lessons we have learnt from caring for older people in HC-One homes all around the country as well as my twenty-five years’ experience of being involved in the care and support of older people.

“As I said to the House of Lords Select Committee members earlier this year, we need to fundamentally change attitudes within the care system. The way, as a society, that we treat older people is one of the greatest issues facing us in 21st Century Britain.

“The Commission has created a unique opportunity to ascertain the views of older people and their families with regard to their aspirations for support and care in their old age. In particular, what it is that they truly value when they need that care and support and how they would like the current provision of those services to be changed.”
