Have your say on new commissioner for older people in Scotland

A consultation has opened into the role of the proposed commissioner for older people in Scotland.

The bill, brought by Colin Smyth MSP, South Scotland Region, proposes the appointment of an independent commissioner to promote and safeguard the rights and interests of older people.

The consultation is open until 12 September and proposes to model the remit of the commissioner on existing models, such as that in Wales.

In 2021-22 key achievements of the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales produces annual reports detailing strategic priorities and the main achievements included developing a rights-based contract and strengthened legal protections for care home residents, new guidance on visiting in care homes based on the legal framework of human rights and other initiatives to strengthen the rights of care home service users and their families.

The general overarching, general function of the Commissioner in Scotland would be to promote and safeguard the rights and interests of older people.

Have your say.
