Two in five health and social care providers unprepared for CQC assessment roll out

Two in five (41 per cent) of health and social care businesses say they feel unprepared for the Care Quality Commission (CQC)’s new single assessment framework. This started rolling out on 21 November with early adopters in the South of England.

Just 6 per cent of those surveyed by employment law, HR and health and safety firm WorkNest and its sister company, Care 4 Quality, said they have the right training and processes in place already despite plans to implement the new assessment system across all providers by spring 2024.

Survey respondents said they were least confident about the following aspects of the new single assessment:

  • Introduction of evidence categories (24 per cent)
  • Online portal development (22 per cent)
  • Introduction of a scoring system for ratings (21 per cent)
  • Quality statements instead of KLOEs (19 per cent)
  • Moving to a monitoring / continuous assessment model (14 per cent)

Julie Walton, head of registrations at Care 4 Quality, said: “Elements of the old framework will still exist under the changes. It won’t be a completely new concept to businesses but there are many things to consider.”

WorkNest and Care 4 Quality recommend several actions care providers can take ahead of their first new assessment:

  • Make quality and compliance a shared cultural value
  • Keep records up to date: CQC Provider Information Return (PIR), audits, evidence of innovation and creativity
  • Reach out to other services
  • Gather, act and document actions on feedback from service users
  • Treat external stakeholders like the CQC – they will be asked for feedback
  • Ensure your evidence is organised in line with the new CQC requirements
  • Consider digitisation
  • Demonstrate awareness of, and participation in integrated system working
