Full Power Utilities is one of the longest standing energy consultants in the industry, and premier introducer Jackie Wright says care homes can save money.
With the ever-changing face of the commercial energy market, it is important care homes understand the energy-buying strategies available to them. We have worked with many care homes large and small across the UK to help them manage the day-to-day running of their energy and reduce their overall spend on this expensive commodity.
We recently helped a small chain of care homes reduce their overall spend over each of their properties by doing a complete energy audit and then making sure they were on the most appropriate tariffs going forward. We achieved a saving of over £6,000 against the renewal offer they received from their current energy supplier.
But, the key way to reduce energy is to reduce usage. Below are some useful tips for doing just this.

Do an audit:
It’s worth carrying out an energy audit to assess where you use the most energy. You’ll be able to spot areas where you’re potentially wasting energy – and money – and you can make changes.
For example, if you have a smart meter, you might notice that you using more energy overnight than during the day. You could be wasting energy on computers on standby or heating an empty office unnecessarily. By assessing how much energy is used, when it’s being used and why, you can make a plan for change.
Keep an eye on your appliances
Do you have appliances that could be switched off for longer? Equipment that doesn’t need to be on 24/7?
How energy-efficient your appliances are, will impact on how much energy they use and, as a result, how much energy you have to pay for. It might be more cost effective to upgrade a piece of older equipment which, in long-term will save you energy.
Check your lighting
Make sure you turn off lights where possible and practical. Would motion sensors work – so that lights only turn on when someone is in the room.
Consider a Building Management System (BMS) which could monitor and manage services, such as power, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, physical access control, lifts and lights.
