Dementia diagnoses hidden by Pandemic, report concludes

The full impact of the COVID pandemic is yet to be seen on the numbers of people referred to memory services and dementia diagnoses, the Government has said in response to an MPs’ report on the disease.

Fewer older people wanting to go out or contact their GP due to fear of infection or that they don’t want to ‘bother’ their GP in the current climate, staff absences due to sickness and isolation through COVID-19 and the suspension of Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) dementia care plan reviews, will also all impact diagnosis rates and care.

In its response to the report, Supporting people with dementia and their carers, the Government said that service models such as Anticipatory Care and Enhanced Health in Care Homes (EHCH) will help provide proactive and integrated care in the community. Key to this is the establishment of ‘enhanced community multidisciplinary teams’ comprising a range of staff such as dementia workers, physiotherapists and others joined by social care and the voluntary sector.
