A letter from the Department of Health has been sent to care providers urging them to “take the necessary action to prevent and limit outbreaks” after a recent rise in COVID-19 infections across the UK.
Stuart Miller, director of adult social care delivery at the Department of Health and Social Care wrote: “Over the past three days, Public Health England (PHE) has reported an increase in notifications of COVID-19 cases in care homes. Testing data has also shown an increase in the number of positive results”.
The infections are mainly affecting the workforce, however, the letter highlights “the importance of regular testing and consistent use of PPE” after rising infections are starting to be seen in care home residents too.
The letter informs care providers of the unique challenges of winter for the sector and the upcoming Adult Social Care Winter Plan which will set out the national support and resources and actions for local areas.
