Health Foundation: Adult social care is a top priority for new government

Fundamental reform of the adult social care sector has been identified as a priority for action by the new government.

One of five priorities, the Health Foundation is calling for increased investment in adult social care to improve access to publicly funded care, support providers to improve services and expand the social care workforce through improved pay and conditions.

The think-tank describes adult social care in terms of unmet need, patchy quality of care and an unstable provider market. As well as the effect on service users and their families, pressures in social care have a knock-on effect on the NHS, contributing to delayed hospital discharge.

Other priorities for the incoming government include:

  • Investing in health as an asset
  • Improve health by tackling inequalities
  • Strengthening capacity and resilience
  • Transform care through innovation, technology and reform.
