Latest figures for care home COVID deaths show a continuing fall in the number of fatalities.
In the week to May 22 (known as week 21), in England and Wales, the Office for National Statistics reports that there were 1,089 care home deaths involving COVID-19, equating to 32.5 per cent of all deaths in care homes. This is a decline from the 37.2 per cent COVID death rate seen during the previous week.
In total, across the UK in week 21, 2,872 deaths in all settings mentioned COVID-19, which is the lowest number of deaths involving COVID-19 in the past seven weeks.
To date in England and Wales (up to W21), there have been 43, 861 deaths involving COVID-19, of which 29 per cent (12,739 deaths) have occurred in care homes, compared to 64.2 per cent (28,159 deaths) in hospital.
