There were 49 outbreaks of flu-like illness in care homes in England, as of December 12, according to the latest figures from Public Health England. This represents a rise of 15 cases (a 44 per cent rise) on the figures for the end of November.
Of the 49 care home outbreaks, 22 tested positive for influenza A, almost quadruple the number as of the end of November.
In the community as a whole, 190 new acute respiratory outbreaks have been captured in the latest figures, a rise of 55 per cent on the previous week. The rate of influenza-like illness is now above threshold levels for the first time this season in England, but remain below it for Scotland and Wales.
Advice on managing visitors during infections will be provided in the January issue of Care Home Management magazine.
