Four in ten care homes can’t accept new residents

Care workers are increasingly turning their backs on the industry and heading for better paid jobs in supermarkets, the general retail sector and leisure and hospitality industries.

The National Care Forum says an immediate funding injection is needed to improve pay, including a loyalty bonus for existing staff. A recent survey by the organisation found that 43 per cent of care homes are closing to new admissions and 66 per cent of homecare providers are having to refuse requests.

NHS chiefs have warned that the “bottleneck” in hospitals would become worse unless social care capacity was increased so that patients could be safely discharged from wards.

A wide range of medical organisations have campaigned for carers to receive a pay rises as at present they can earn more stacking shelves in supermarkets.
