Publishing giant DC Thomson Media is providing some care homes with packs of its magazines to help them through the COVID-19 crisis.
It has supplied residents at Balhousie Care Group’s homes around Dundee, Angus and Perthshire with back issues of selected magazines including The People’s Friend, My Weekly and The Scots Magazine to support those temporarily separated from their loved ones.
Jan Robertson, home manager at Balhousie Willowbank in Carnoustie, says it is a welcome gesture.
“Residents and staff are really touched by it,” she says. “Activities, games, letters and indoor exercise are highly important right now as we try and keep spirits up. These parcels were a welcome boost and we all want to say a huge thank you.”
Balhousie Care Group was formed 27 years ago to fill a gap in quality residential care in North East Scotland. Today, it has 25 homes in the area providing care to more than 900 residents.
Angela Gilchrist, editor of The People’s Friend, says she appreciated how distressing it can be for both families and residents to be told visits cannot take place. “Donating magazines seemed like a good way to help raise spirits amongst care home residents, and I’m delighted to hear how warmly they’ve been received.”
