Lincolnshire MP Victoria Atkins takes up top care post

Lincolnshire MP Victoria Atkins has been named as the new health and care secretary in today’s reshuffle.

Atkins describes herself as a campaigner for social care. At constituency level, she has followed Covid vaccination in care homes and takes an interest in older people’s issues.

In parliament, prior to the health and care post, Atkins was financial secretary to the Treasury where she handled matters such as the payment of the minimum wage in social care.

She has also held junior ministerial posts in justice and Afghan resettlement.

Making way for Atkins is Steve Barclay, who moves from health to environment.
