Care homes can expect immigrant workforce to drop by a fifth

Changes to the dependents visa will reduce the immigrant workforce by more than one fifth, health and social care MPs have heard.

In a debate held on December 13, Permanent Secretary Sir Chris Wormald suggested the move would reduce the UK’s demand on the global pool of immigrant workers by 22 per cent.

Defending the changes to immigration announced by Home Secretary James Cleverly earlier this month, health and care secretary Victoria Atkins stated that the UK “had got to the point where more people were coming over as dependants than people who were working under visas”. She added: “This visa route was much more popular than we could have hoped for.”

She reiterated her support for skills-based learning as a way to deliver a sustainable care workforce and said that a £600 million investment in the sector would ensure that parts of the country can increase their wage levels for social care work.
