Radar Healthcare’s Inspection Ready Whenever They Are series[RC2] highlights how although organisations cannot be certain of when the Care Quality Commission will come, they can make sure that they are always prepared.
To support this, our series can help industry professionals better understand what the CQC expects and offer best practices to achieve that. Our CQC hub contains explanations on how the CQC works, advice on improving your rating, as well as a breakdown of the five KLOE (Key Lines of Enquiry) standards; safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led.
We also investigated how healthcare professionals prepare for a sudden inspection by proposing questions based on what the CQC may ask during an assessment. The findings of this survey were surprising and concerning.
46% are not confident that their audits are up to date. Audits are key to helping services maintain high levels of care and safety. Services can use audits to see what has happened and why, learnings, and suggestions for improvement – all of which the CQC looks for.
“Audits prompt staff to be more inquisitive, making them feel part of the team and in turn, part of the decision-making process.”
41% do not have a centralised incident log. Healthcare organisations work across multiple documents on different platforms, often in many different iterations. This can become confusing for co-workers when collaborating on shared and vital information.
Having a system that centralises all this data strategically reduces human error, increases productivity, and widens visibility and accessibility.
“We’ve gone from a very huge paper-based care governance committee report to a point where the first part of every meeting is me putting up Radar Healthcare on the screen and going through the last quarter – that’s been really helpful.”

51% do not have an action plan linking incidents and audits. The CQC advocates continuous improvement within an organisation. Having action plans in place, that link relevant audits, events, and incidents shows a proactive approach to improving the service.
