Scottish Government puts figures on take-up of £8m interim care placement scheme

Some 581 people are currently benefitting from an an interim care placement following discharge from hospital, the Scottish Government has said, following a question about its £8 million interim care home bed scheme.

Foysol Choudhury (Lothian) (Lab) countered by saying there are reports that individuals are unable to be discharged from hospital due to a lack of available spaces in care homes.

The interim beds scheme funds commissioners to pay above the national care home contract rate t secure the provision of 300 extra beds. Refreshed guidance on hospital discharge to care homes states that where the preferred choice(s) of care home is not immediately available the person will be required to make a temporary … move to another home with a suitable vacancy to wait.”

Then First Minister Nicola Sturgeon explained that work was underway to improve understanding of care home bed capacity and she added: “The national care service will help to ensure consistency and fairness at a national level.”
