The Relatives & Residents Association and the National Care Forum have created a joint statement setting out shared expectations and good practice relating to the importance of clear, open, transparent and regular communications during the COVID-19 pandemic. This outlines the following steps:
- Keeping family members informed about their own relative’s COVID-19 status (suspected or confirmed)
- Being as open and transparent as possible with family members about the situation in the home

The Relatives & Residents Association says relatives are very concerned about the wellbeing of their relatives in care RRA director Helen Wildbore says that if relatives then don’t receive information and updates from their relative’s care home, this can compound their anxiety. “Keeping residents and their families updated on the situation in the home and steps taken to manage the virus will ensure an information gap doesn’t create unnecessary fear or anxiety. “
The guiance is endorsed by the Care Provider Alliance, the Care Quality Commission and Skills for Care.
