First King’s Speech disappoints social care

Care England has expressed disappointment with the silence on social care in the King’s Speech.

Professor Martin Green, chief executive of Care England, said: “When Boris Johnson was first elected as Prime Minister, he stood on the steps of 10 Downing Street and promised to fix social care. Three prime ministers later, that promise sits broken.

“Care England remains hopeful that the Autumn Statement will be an opportunity to show that this Government is truly committed to fixing social care.”

Homecare Association CEO Dr Jane Townson OBE also called on government to recognise social care as a vital part of the economy with its own industrial strategy.

On behalf of nurses, RCN Chief Nurse Professor Nicola Ranger said: “The government should have used the King’s speech to address issues facing the health care workforce, including legislating for safe staffing. England is an outlier even within the UK now.”
