MDT effect on emergency admissions depends on care home type, research finds

Multidisciplinary teams have had a very positive effect in reducing emergency hospital admissions in residential care homes – but have had none in nursing care homes, a study into the effectiveness of MDTs has found

Realising the potential of community-based multidisciplinary teams concludes that on the whole, the MDT programme has had a positive effect on patient outcomes in care homes, however, broad evaluation can mask differing effects within subgroups of patients.

The research suggests that the effectiveness of MDTs depends on many factors, including team resources and skills, staff engagement, IT resources, access to data, population characteristics, and broader context such as local community services and overall levels of investment.

MDTs are teams of health and care professionals who plan and coordinate services for their patients by exchanging information between health professionals, making joint decisions and facilitating access to services depending on patients’ needs.
