Barchester and HC-One named for failing to pay NMW

Barchester Healthcare and HC-One are among 524 employers named by the government for failing to pay the minimum wage.

Barchester is named as owing over £58,500 to 674 workers, averaging at £87.08 each. At HC-One, the breach concerns six workers who are each owed £195.23, making a total debt of £1171.40.

Other care home businesses punished for NMW breaches are:

  • Amwell Care Home, Melton, Leicestershire. £2,458.61 to 53 workers (av. per worker: £46.39
  • Respectful Care, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. £1,908.89 to 13 workers (av. per worker: £146.84)
  • Woodlands Retirement Residence, Dudley, West Midlands. £929.89 to 19 workers (av. per worker: £48.94)
  • Clarence Lodge, Great Yarmouth. £916.56 to one worker
  • Care Worldwide Carlton Ltd, Salford. £822.89 to 13 workers (av. per worker: £63.30)
  • Parkview Residential Home, Bolton. £595.29 to 36 workers  (av. per worker: £16.54)

All businesses named in this list have since paid back what they owe to their staff and have also faced financial penalties of up to 200 per cent of their underpayment. The investigations by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) concluded between 2015 and 2023.

Among the big name companies also named in this round are Estee Lauder Cosmetics (£894,980.43), Easyjet (£338,876.46) and Greggs (£219,129.07)

Minister for Enterprise, Markets and Small Business Kevin Hollinrake said: “Whilst not all minimum wage underpayments are intentional, anyone entitled to be paid the minimum wage should receive it. Employees deserve to get paid properly for the hard work they put in.”  

A spokesperson for HC-One said: “The six cases in question occurred between six and 11 years ago (2013 to 2018) and resulted from genuine human error. They were each identified and quickly resolved with the affected team members at the time and via our normal internal process.”
