A new NHS England guide aims to support care home staff with proxy access to support residents with repeat medication ordering or communications to the GP.
The guide explains how carers can access parts of a resident’s GP online services account. In proxy access, with the resident’s permission, the carer is given their own online access account (rather than using the patient’s login details) to view selected parts of the resident’s GP record.
Local authorities and the NHS have published a step-by-step guide for care homes, GP practices and pharmacies to support ordering medication by proxy, and Access to Information in the GP record guide to support implementation.
Only care homes with a secure email system and preferably the NHSmail system can have proxy access, and this is subject to GP IT system compatibility.
Further information on care home email security is available in the Data Security Protection Toolkit (DSPT) and NHSmail guidance.
