Number of care homes in Scotland down 20% in a decade

The number of care homes in Scotland has dropped by 20% in the last ten years, according to data from Public Health Scotland.

Figures show that by March 2021, there were 1069 care homes for adults – one fifth fewer than in March 2011.

There are currently 40,632 registered places in care homes – a 5 per cent decrease on 2011.

According to data from the Care Home Inspectorate, 33 care homes have closed between 2019 and this year.

The report also showed a 10 per cent decrease in long-stay residents in care homes for older people, from 32,545 in 2011 to 29,317 in March this year.
