Open letter to Parliament calls for change to “dementia tax”

The Filo Project’s open letter to Downing Street asks the government to abandon unfair VAT rules so families can afford the dementia care they need.

The provider of day services for people with dementia is calling for a VAT exemption on the cost of its service, which it describes as a “dementia tax”

As a Community Interest Company, it is within the scope of VAT rules. But, as a not-for-profit organisation, Filo believes that should change.

Supporters are asked to sign and share a petition or write to their MP.

In a statement, Care England CEO Professor Martin Green said: “If the Government were to zero rate VAT for welfare services or endorse welfare services restructuring, it would inject hundreds of millions of pounds in additional funds into the social care sector, directly to struggling care providers.

“A change to VAT policy for social care would see between £30 to £50 per week added to every weekly care package funded by Local Authorities and the NHS equivalent to a 4-6 per cent fee uplift and go a significant way to help solve the social care funding crisis.”
