The former director general of the CBI and chairman of the Financial Services Authority has called for higher wages for staff in care homes.
In a speech to a Resolution Foundation conference, Lord Turner demanded better pay for public sector workers and demanded tax increases to pay for it, not the cuts being discussed among candidates for the leadership of the Conservative Party.
Said Lord Turner: “We should address some issues both of inequality and dignity. We should pay people in care homes more.
“I think we have to take head on the debate that, not only should we be rejecting this absurd auction of tax cuts at the moment, but [accept] maybe a somewhat higher, not much higher, rate of tax is essential for an optimal response to the challenges that we face,” he said.
