PM seeks volunteers for new dementia research bid

The Prime Minister has launched a national mission to tackle dementia and doubled research funding in memory of the late Dame Barbara Windsor.

Volunteers can get involved in the research effort through the Join Dementia Research website.  A key focus of the initiative is to identify signals of risk factors for dementia to support preventative care.

The initiative will be known as the ‘Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Mission,’ and will comprise a renewed research effort, funded by an additional £95 million in ringfenced monies. This will help meet the manifesto commitment to double dementia research funding by 2024, reaching a total of £160 million a year.

Industry, the NHS, academia and families living with dementia will all be involved in the initiative, which hopes to reduce the costs of clinical trials and speed up the process. There will also be a new  Dementia Medicines Taskforce.

One million people are predicted to be living with dementia by 2025, and 1.6 million by 2040. Up to 40 per cent of dementia cases are potentially preventable but causes are still poorly understood.
