Scotland to look at care home provision as solution to bed-blocking

Scotland’s Health & Sport Committee is to discuss a 2018 petition calling on the Scottish Parliament to review how care homes can alleviate bed-blocking.

Lodged by former South Lanarkshire councillor Edward Archer, the petition highlights the move away from residential care in Scotland as a result of Care At Home strategy.

But he says: “Public reaction has not been positive, as there is still a need for residential care.”

The petition highlights the disparate provision of residential care in Scotland, which is exacerbated by poor public transport, and the potential for bed-blocking if the necessary care packages are unavailable.

The petition also highlights the lack of cottage or community hospitals in Scotland.
