Scottish care providers call for inspectors to have the necessary skills and time

Care and support providers in Scotland have called for a rethink in regulation strategy ahead of the planned National Care Service in Scotland.

In a response to the Inspection, Scrutiny and Regulation review, providers make the case for inspection officers with the necessary skills and training to engage with people with communication support needs and that inspections are given adequate time.

Introduction of the National Care Service has put the spotlight on care home regulation, and whether current processes are fit for the new service.

In its response, the Coalition of Care and Support Providers in Scotland has highlighted the shortcomings of the use of unannounced visits and pre-inspection questionnaires, and points out the advantage of a relational approach to inspection. The leaders group also calls for strategic inspections to identify where commissioning and procurement do not adequately allow for fair pay, staff learning and development, or the necessary hours of support.
