Some post codes are ‘care deserts’ says charity Age UK

Age UK says many areas of the UK are becoming ‘care deserts’ with a serious lack of care beds.

The charity says the problem is worse for the most frail members of society who are being failed by difficulties in recruiting staff and running services.

Age UK estimates that 1.4m older people are not getting the care they need.

The charity surveyed 7,500 postcodes and discovered that 30% had no residential care beds and 62% have no nursing home beds.

It points to serious underfunding at council level where spending per person had fallen 9% in real terms since 2010.
