Speculation mounts that Javid is considering U-turn on mandatory COVID jabs

National media are reporting that the Government could be about to back-track on mandatory COVID vaccinations for NHS staff.

In the Evening Standard, it is reported that Health Secretary Sajid Javid will meet ministers today and will confirm a U-turn ahead of an official announcement later this week.

NHS staff had until February 3 to get a jab but fears the health service could lose close to 80,000 workers who remain unvaccinated are expected to trigger a rethink.

According to ES sources, the Government believes the less severe Omicron variant has changed thinking on a policy drafted when the Delta variant was dominant.

A legal requirement for care workers to be vaccinated came into effect last November, prompting staff losses and legal action.

Speaking on LBC this morning, a legal expert said that employers such as care homes who have dismissed unvaccinated staff, would not have to reemploy those staff members, as the dismissal was lawful at the time.
