Staff shortages present catastrophic risk on Jersey

A shortage of staff poses a “potentially catastrophic risk” to care services in Jersey, the independent regulator has warned.

Jersey Care Commission’s report states job vacancy rates are increasing, and care providers are struggling to maintain quality and safety standards. It also says demand on local care services is intensifying.

The Commission wants a long-term plan to be developed which focuses on suitable housing and worker retention. It also wants to see better relationships between the government and Jersey’s care services.

It says many care providers have “insufficient numbers of experienced staff” and services can be cancelled at short notice. This leads to staff often working in “firefighting mode”.

The Care Commission calls for more suppoert for providers and says that without positive intervention, the current and worsening situation means there is a real possibility of a future care system failure.
