How a care consultant’s expertise can improve your care home’s bottom line

The care home owners and managers I talk to, whether at a single operator or at a smaller group, worry about the time constraints they face and the lack of dedicated in-house expertise when it comes to health and safety, cost controls and operations.

For example, managers can lack confidence when it comes to facing external inspection and audits, whether it be CQC, CCG Local Authority or a Fire officer audit. 

In addition, they feel an adverse report will have a knock on effect with agencies becoming involved, leading to further inspections which could potentially reduce their ratings.

Another issue often raised is in the way accidents and incidents are managed and documented with any lessons learnt. Falls and choking assessments are a concern, for example, and there should be a process in place to evidence how issues can be mitigated. Prompt accident investigations can deflect potential inflammatory actions by authorities and concern from residents’ families. 

Fire is a prime source of worry for all, including insurers, but fire prevention measures and fire risk assessment reviews are extremely important, if time consuming. 

In the last year or so, county and city Fire Prevention Officers have been reviewing loft and roof space risk assessments and insisting on compartmentalisation where the risk is high, especially in older homes converted from a residential building.

These costs can be high if a care home does not do sufficient research and work with a competent passive fire provider.

Costs rising

Every care home is suffering from rising costs but these can be mitigated by careful analysis of contracts and suppliers.

Now is the time to act because the situation is not going to get any easier. Laundry, equipment, fire alarm  and legionella servicing, plus food and utility costs, need to be challenged. Going through this research process can even result in a rise in service levels.
