How mindfulness benefits residents with dementia

Mindfulness and meditation can be as effective as antidepressant medication.

The idea of paying attention to our experiences in the present moment, slowing our breathing and focusing on the things around us, can also slow the progression of memory-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

“For those living with dementia mood swings, changes in behaviour and increased sensitivity to noise and crowds, mindfulness is calming and reassuring,” said Emma Johnson from The Daily Sparkle which runs activities for people living with Dementia. “Your goal is to help residents tap into each of their senses.”

Among the activities Johnson recommends are asking residents to describe how something feels or tastes, therapeutic colouring or painting, and physical activities such as yoga.
