Welsh care homes are invited to comment on new best practice guidance for care homes on food and nutrition for older people.
The consultation asks for views following surveys across Wales that reveal large numbers of people with suboptimal weight, both overweight or obese and suffering from undernutrition: in 2011 a survey estimated an overall prevalence of undernutrition of 41 per cent in care homes, with a range of 30-40 per cent on admission.
The guidance sets out the standards of nutritional care and support to be provided and gives examples, including menu plans and recipe ideas, of how care homes can demonstrate an excellent level of nutritional care. The consultation is open until Friday 11 October and asks care homes to comment on the training, support or resources required to help support the successful implementation of the best practice guidance.
Food and nutrition will be covered in detail in the September issue of Care Home Management magazine. Care homes are eligible to receive a free print or digital copy – just sign up now via the website!
