Wales reports two deaths from COVID in first quarter of 2021

Data showing suspected or confirmed deaths in care homes from COVID-19 reveal just two deaths from the disease in the first quarter of 2021-22.

This is a fall from 651 in the final quarter of 2020-21.

The full dataset covers the period 1 January 2020 to 30 June 2021. The data is based on notifications to us by adult care home providers about deaths of residents involving COVID-19 both confirmed and suspected.

Data author Care Inspectorate Wales notes that the number of death notifications involving COVID-19 is not in itself an indicator of the quality of care provided. There are many factors which affect the number of deaths in a care home. These include but are not limited to: rates of community transmission, the size and layout of the care home, the age, ethnicity and health and care needs of the people living in the home.
