Lack of Welsh care home beds blamed for poorer outcomes in stroke

Lack of availability of care home beds has been cited as one of the reasons for poorer outcomes for patients who suffer a stroke.

A review of patient flow in stroke care indicates that health and social care services are not operating as effectively as they could be, according to the Welsh health regulator, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales.

Among the problems caused by delayed discharge are risk of hospital acquired infections or deterioration, and the knock-on impact on emergency departments, ambulance response times, inpatient care, planned admissions and overall staff wellbeing.

The report concludes: “This inefficiency increases the risk of complications arising and has a significant impact on the overall health and care system in Wales.”

The report calls for renewed efforts from the health and social care sector, as well as the Welsh Government, to tackle the issue of poor patient flow.
