Welsh minister dodges question over council’s own care home premium fees

The Welsh Government has been held to task over preferential payments to a council’s own care home.

In a question Senedd constituency member Janet Finch-Saunders asked why Conwy County Borough Council is paying its own care home 57 per cent more than privately-run care homes for the same level of care.

In her question to Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd Lesley Griffiths, she said that Conwy awarded itself £1,136 per resident per week, while only paying £721 to privately-run homes in Conwy. Calling this “clear discrimination”, Finch-Saunders asked: “How can this even be ethical?”

Griffiths replied by advising that the question should be redirected to Conwy council, adding: “I don’t think that’s a matter for the Deputy Minister for Social Services”.
