Wales phases in six month care worker registration

Social Care Wales is phasing in the requirement for the registration of adult care home workers in Wales within six months.

New adult care home workers starting in a care business on or after 1 October 2022 will be given up to 1 October 2023 to register with Social Care Wales. Employees starting work on or after 1 April 2023 will also need to register by 1 October 2023, or within six months of starting employment in a care business.

During COVID, new adult care home workers were given 12 months to register.  In addition, new registration criteria aim to speed up the process, namely:

  • replacing the Principles and Values Award route with a simplified employer assessment model, based on core competencies
  • reducing the required number of hours of continuous professional development (CPD) in the three-year registration period for social care workers from 90 to 45 hours

Resources to support care business staff and employers are available online.
